A grant for a housing needs survey in Britton has been approved by the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA).
Kyle Ortmeier brought a few guests to school with him on Friday, Jan. 25: a documentary film crew. Ortmeier will be part of a big-name documentary discussing the national pandemic childhood obesity. Katie Couric of CBS News and Laurie David, producer of “An Inconvenient Truth,” are co-producers on the project.
In December 2012, Steve Zwinger’s phone started ringing, with many North Dakota farmers at the other end of the line. Organic corn had hit a flabbergasting $14 per bushel, and conventional farmers wanted to ask Zwinger, an extension agent for NDSU, how they could cash in on organic corn.

Lee Kopriva, Raymond, represented South Dakota in the Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) Discussion Meet after winning the state contest in November and advancing on to the national contest.
The YF&G Discussion Meet is a public speaking contest designed to simulate a committee meeting in which active discussion and participation are expected from each participant. They exchange ideas and solve problems on predetermined agricultural topics. Kopriva advanced through two rounds of the contest, competing against other young farmers and ranchers from 40 state Farm Bureaus.
This past season, SDSU state agronomist Nathan Mueller did not put cows out to graze in his corn field near Hooper, Neb. He wanted the extra residue left to help with next year’s crop. “Residue in a dry year helps retain moisture,” stated Mueller, “that’s why it’s good to leave those corn stalks in the field.”
Oak Tree Energy, LLC received some really good news last week. On Tuesday, Jan. 22, the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission gave a verbal order as a final decision in regard to the Clark Wind Farm, developed by Oak Tree Energy.
In 1983, an agreement was reached between the City of Groton and the Brown County Commissioners regarding the maintenance of the old U.S. Highway 12 that enters Groton from the east. A group of Groton officials reminded the commissioners of this agreement during the Brown County Commissioners meeting on Monday.
From its humble beginnings, the Carnival of Silver Skates has grown to a major event that celebrated its 75th year this past weekend. The Jubilee performance featured 108 skaters from the community, both young and past skaters.
