I have been making this argument for a while now: One amazing aspect of living in a place where the horizon is visible is that we are treated to awe-inspiring visions of sky theater.
A photographer in Nebraska captured amazing images of supercells, which are featured in a slide show on theAtlantic.com. One example from that collection is shown above.
Of course, we have amazing skies in the Dakotas, too. Here is one example that I took just out my car window with my iPhone camera:

What if we did more to encourage our region as a haven for photographers? I know of a number of city dwellers who have been impressed by the quality of morning and evening light on the Great Plains. Don’t forget that in many places in the nation, the horizon is obscured. Many city dwellers rarely see the sun touching the horizon. Let’s make the most of this asset!
