Karla Hernandez recently joined the SDSU Extension team as a Forages Field Specialist, pending approval by the Board of Regents.
As the SDSU Extension Forages Field Specialist, Hernandez will deliver research-based programming and educational resources focused on supporting South Dakota producers in growing and utilizing forages such as hays, cover crops, silages and grazing systems.
“Karla will be a great resource for South Dakota producers. She brings extensive experience in both research and teaching,” said Rosie Nold, SDSU Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Program Director. “Her background includes training and experience in forage production, native grasses, and ruminant nutrition. This combination will allow her to look at production and utilization of forages from a systems perspective, whether it be incorporating alfalfa production into a crop rotation system, or optimizing utilization of more permanent forages.”

Hernandez received her doctorate in Plant Science from South Dakota State University; she received her master’s as well as her bachelor’s in Animal Science from University of Puerto Rico.
Her doctorate research focused on the evaluation of prairie cordgrass for biomass production on marginal land in South Dakota and Kansas. She was advised by Vance N. Owens, Interim Director and Professor at SDSU.
She looks forward to working withSouth Dakotaproducers in her new role as an SDSU Extension Forages Field Specialist.
“I want to deliver new research-based and educational resources focused on Forage production acrossSouth Dakotathat will be helpful to producers and others in general,” she said.
Hernandez will work out of the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Watertown.
