Bette Doehler didn’t miss her son’s wedding on Jan. 19. She was there, smiling from her wheelchair, in mother-of-the-bride attire, complete with corsage.

Bette Doehler has been a resident of Ave Maria Village in Jamestown since Jan. 23, 2012. “Mom’s life is better here because of the care she receives from the AMV staff,” said Bette’s son, John Doehler.

On Jan. 4, her 79th birthday, the AMV staff posted her picture on their Facebook page. She received 25 “likes” and 13 birthday greetings.

About two weeks later, on Jan. 19, John and Carol Davis were married at Ave Maria Village’s Barthel Hall. Bette’s grandson, John James Doehler, was his father’s best man, and JJ’s wife, Sage, was Carol’s maid of honor.

The Rev. Roy Noel, pastor at Zoar Lutheran Church in LaMoure, conducted the wedding ceremony. Forty friends and relatives attended the afternoon wedding, which was followed by refreshments.

Carol wore a diamond white wedding gown with Bette’s diamond bracelet to complete her attire.

“This is a great day for all of us,” Carol said, “but especially for Bette, because she was able to be part of the wedding by having the wedding brought to her.”

Bette had this comment on the day: “My son is a lucky guy.”

A wedding album is posted on AMV’s Facebook page.

The family had another gathering on Jan. 29, this time at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Rolla, N.D.—for Bette’s funeral mass. Betty Doehler passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23.

But she had been there at the wedding, smiling. And that great day they can remember.
